Wisdom teeth can grow at odd angles, only partly break through the gum, or get trapped beneath the gum and bone. This may cause swelling, pain, and illness.
Not only does regaining teeth allow you to eat anything, but dentures also look natural and maintain your face's shape. With dental implants, you can show your pearly whites off with pride!
Severe tooth decay, impacted wisdom teeth, or to make room for braces are some of the reasons for single or multiple tooth extractions.
Before being fitted for a partial or complete denture, some patients require minor oral surgical procedures to minimize discomfort.
Your mouth is normally lined with smooth, coral-pink skin called the mucosa. If you notice any changes in this appearance, it could be a warning sign of a pathological process, such as oral cancer.
An impacted tooth is "stuck" and non-functional. Wisdom teeth are the most commonly impacted teeth, and patients usually have them extracted since there's no functional purpose for wisdom teeth.
Over time, the jawbone associated with missing teeth atrophies. This often leaves behind a lack of bone quality and quantity suitable for dental implants. In these situations, bone grafting becomes necessary to grow new bone in the affected area.
3D dental imaging is a process that uses an X-ray arm that captures images from different angles and sends them to a computer. The computer then puts the images together in three dimensions.

Tooth extractions in Mansfield, Ohio, are sometimes necessary to maintain or restore your oral health, especially when a tooth is damaged beyond repair. We provide skilled and compassionate care to make sure your extraction process is smooth. Our expert oral surgeon, Dr. Jason Yanich, is here to guide you through every step of the way and help you achieve a healthy, pain-free smile.
Tooth extractions are a common procedure, but understanding when and why they’re needed is key.
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. It is often needed when a tooth is too damaged to be saved with fillings or crowns. A general dentist can perform tooth extractions, but more complex cases are referred to an oral surgeon.
There are two types of tooth extractions:
Your oral surgeon in Mansfield will exhaust all options with you and guide you toward the best bone grafting procedure, based on your wants and the state of your jawbone density.
Simple extractions are done on teeth visible in the mouth and can be accessed by the dentist or oral surgeon. This procedure involves loosening the tooth with an elevator and removing it with forceps. Simple extractions are quick and easy and only require local anesthesia.
Surgical Extractions
Surgical extractions are more complex and are needed when a tooth is not accessible, such as impacted wisdom teeth or teeth that have broken off at the gum line. During a surgical extraction, the oral surgeon may need to make an incision in the gum tissue, remove bone around the tooth, or even cut the tooth into smaller pieces for easier removal. Surgical extractions often require a combination of local anesthesia and sedation.
Tooth extractions are sometimes necessary to protect your oral health, prevent further complications, or prepare for other dental treatments. Here are some common reasons you might need a tooth extraction:
When a tooth is severely decayed or infected, and root canals are not an option, extraction is the best option to prevent the infection from spreading to other teeth or the body.
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, often get impacted, meaning they don’t have enough room to come in properly. This can cause pain, infection, and damage to adjacent teeth, so extraction is the best solution.
When there isn’t enough room in your mouth for all your teeth to fit properly, a tooth extraction may be needed as part of orthodontic treatment. Removing one or more teeth can create the space needed for a straighter smile.
Advanced gum disease can weaken the bone supporting the teeth and cause them to loosen or fall out. In some cases, a tooth extraction is necessary to remove teeth that can no longer be supported due to severe gum disease.
Teeth that are broken or damaged from trauma, such as a sports injury or accident, may need to be extracted if they can’t be repaired through restorative dentistry.
Before placing dentures or dental implants, you may need to remove teeth that are compromised or non functional to ensure the success of the restorative treatment.
After your tooth extraction, proper care is crucial for a quick and easy recovery. Dr. Yanich gives you these tips to help you heal well and avoid complications:
Manage Pain and Swelling: You’ll experience some discomfort and swelling after the extraction. Dr. Yanich recommends taking over-the-counter pain meds as directed and applying an ice pack to the outside of your cheek for 15-20 minutes at a time for the first 24 hours to reduce swelling.
Eat Soft Food: For the first few days, eat soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies to avoid irritating the extraction site. Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods that can mess with the healing process. Gradually introduce solid foods as you feel more comfortable.
Keep the Extraction Site Clean: Good oral hygiene is important but be gentle around the extraction site. Dr. Yanich says to rinse your mouth gently with a saltwater solution 24 hours after the procedure. Don’t vigorous rinse or spit as this can dislodge the blood clot and cause dry socket.
No Straws and No Smoking: Using a straw or smoking can create a suction that can dislodge the blood clot at the extraction site. Dr. Yanich recommends avoiding these for at least 72 hours to prevent complications.
Rest and Take It Easy: Let your body heal by taking it easy for the first couple of days after the extraction. Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting as these can cause bleeding and delay healing.
Drink Plenty of Water: Drink lots of fluids but avoid carbonated or alcoholic drinks for the first few days. Staying hydrated is key to a smooth recovery, but be careful not to drink through a straw, which can mess with the healing process.
Watch for Complications: While most extractions heal without issue, be aware of any signs of complications. If you experience excessive bleeding, severe pain, fever or signs of infection, call Dr. Yanich for advice and possible follow up care.
